Heber C. Crockett, MD, a co-founder of Cayenne Medical, is an attending orthopedic surgeon at New West Sports Medicine in Kearney, NE and also serves as an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Nebraska. Crockett is the author of over 20 peer-reviewed orthopedic articles and has also authored a review textbook in the field of orthopedics. A graduate of the School of Medicine at the University of California in Los Angeles, CA, Crockett completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, NY. In 1998, Crockett completed a fellowship in sports medicine with Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, AL.
Steven L. Gex, a founding member of the Cayenne Board of Directors, is presently the Chief Executive Officer of BioLucent and a former Chairman of the Board of Opus Medical. Before joining BioLucent, Gex held the positions of President and Chief Executive Officer of Biopsys Medical. Gex has also served as Vice President of Marketing at Laurus Medical Corp and Applied Medical Resources, both of which he co-founded. Additionally, Gex has held senior management positions in marketing, business development and manufacturing operations at Edwards Laboratories, a division of American Hospital Supply Corporation. Gex holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from San Diego State University in San Diego, CA.
David W. Stassen is a founding Managing Director of Split Rock Partners and a member of the firms health care investment team. While his investing purview spans the country, Stassen focuses particularly on the strong medical technology industry in Minnesota. Prior to founding Split Rock Partners, Stassen was a General Partner with St. Paul Venture Capital’s health care team. He rejoined St. Paul Venture Capital in 2000, nine years after he left the firm to lead Spine-Tech, an emerging growth company specializing in development and marketing of revolutionary spinal implant products. Stassen led Spine-Tech from its formation in 1991 through growth in revenue to over $100 million. The company was acquired in January 1998 for over $600 million. Stassen began his business career with IBM Corporation. He holds a bachelors degree in quantitative methods and an MBA from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN.
Michael C. Sherman has been a partner of MB Venture Partners since he joined the firm after a successful 15-year career at Memphis-based Medtronic Sofamor Danek (MSD), a subsidiary of Medtronic. Sherman joined Danek as the Director of Product Development in early 1991. In 1999, Sherman assumed the position of Vice President of Technology Development where he was responsible for technical and business due diligence on acquisitions, in-licensing activities, and strategic investments. Sherman is an inventor of MSDs SEXTANT System and has 66 issued US patents with over 30 pending applications. Sherman received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, and a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Texas, Southwestern Graduate School in Dallas, TX.
James W. Hart, a co-founder of Cayenne Medical, has served as President, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board since its inception. Prior to joining Cayenne Medical, Hart was President and Chief Executive Officer of Opus Medical, where he led its successful acquisition by ArthroCare Corporation in 2004. Prior to this, Hart was President, Chief Operating Officer and a Director of Orthopaedic Biosystems, Inc. (OBL). Hart was instrumental in accelerating growth at OBL and successfully sold the business to Smith & Nephew in November of 2000. Prior to joining OBL, Hart was Vice President of Strategic Marketing for Zimmer, Inc. He has also held positions at Johnson & Johnson and Procter & Gamble and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of IsoTis OrthoBiologics and Peak Surgical. Hart’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from DePauw University in Greencastle, IN, and the Executive Program at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business in Palo Alto, CA.
Stephen M. Campe joined Investor Growth Capital’s New York office in 1998 as Managing Director with a primary focus on medical device investments. He has been President of IGC and member of the Management Group of Investor AB since 2008 with responsibility for Investor Growth Capital’s activities in the US, Europe and Asia. Prior to joining IGC, Campe was a consultant at McKinsey & Co. where he worked on corporate finance and strategy engagements for several diversified health care and industrial companies. Prior to McKinsey, he was an investment banker specializing primarily in mergers and acquisitions for medical technology and diagnostics companies. Campe earned an M.B.A. from Yale School of Management and a B.S. in Economics and a B.A. in Systems Science Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He currently serves as a board member of several companies including Applied Spine, Galil Medical, CHF Solutions and Intuity Medical. Over the past 10 years, Campe has led numerous medical technology investments on behalf of IGC, including notable companies such as Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ: ISRG) and Kyphon (acquired by Medtronic).
Cayenne has received 510(k) market clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration for the AperFix® System, iFix™ System and CrossFix™ System and all the products are available for clinical use in the United States. Additionally Cayenne holds a CE Mark for the design and manufacture of femoral and tibial implants with inserters, interference screws and instruments for tissue reconstruction. Cayenne operates a Quality Management system, which complies with the requirements of ISO 13485:2003.
